On June 15, 2016 the project command center in Lhasa announced that an additional five stations will be added to the Qinghai Tibet Railway. The authorities have emphasized that the environmental protection is a top consideration with water sources and vegetation being protected. The Qinghai Tibet Railway is the highest and longest railway in the world at 1,956 kilometers.
